Improving communication and social skills in young people.

Children are not things to be molded but are people to be unfolded.

Our goal at Colorado’s Network for Developmental Disabilities (CONetDD) is to use Applied Behavioral Analysis to help better understand a person on the autism spectrum or those with other developmental disabilities. Each of our young people is treated as an individual with a treatment plan specifically for them.

Applied Behavioral Analysis

ABA is considered an evidence-based best practice treatment by the US Surgeon General and by the American Psychological Association. ABA is not just for individuals with extreme behaviors. Interventions associated with applied behavioral analysis help to identify how individuals relate to their surroundings (people, places, smells, sounds, textures, objects, temperature…anything that can be observed by another person) and identifies ways to modify the environment while teaching new skills to increase desired behaviors (communication, focus, socializing, life skills) and reduce or eliminate maladaptive behaviors (isolation, tantrums, aggression, self-injury, property destruction). Its success rates in children from early childhood to young teens has been life-altering. At CONetDD, we hope to be able to work with your child as soon after diagnosis as possible in order to begin structured training that will help with their life ahead.

How Treating With ABA Works

Our therapists use a variety of methods to help everyone in our care to best achieve skills and activities of daily living that are appropriate for them. We work with children and teens at home with and without their families as well as in the community. Our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) administer assessments to help determine which treatment will have the best results for each person. We work in collaboration with the family and other support professionals (teachers, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, etc.,) to develop realistic behavior expectations and goals to propel development in all areas. Once a plan is in place, you will have regular therapy sessions with a registered behavior technician (RBT) with frequent visits from the BCBA to ensure that goals are being met and the program remains dynamic and engaging for your child.

Ways ABA Can Help Your Child Be Their Best Self

Children with autism and related disabilities experience our world differently than their non-autistic peers.  Communication delays often interfere with one’s expression of needs and emotions, behaviors exhibited in place of verbal communication are intentional and serve to meet specific needs and will continue as long as they continue to meet the person’s needs.  We help the children and teens in our care using positive approaches and strategies to change the way needs are met, not the person.

ABA:

  • helps children and teens explore and expand their interests to develop talents and leisure skills to enhance their quality of life.
  • teaches skills to promote independence (toileting, dressing, hygiene, self-help)
  • builds confidence through repetition and reinforcement (we can say this because they become more likely to participate and interact as therapy progresses)
  • reduces challenging behaviors
  • improves functional communication
  • serves all ages to supports academic and vocational readiness

In-home ABA focuses on improving communication and social skills as well as the dynamics within the family. Honed down to more specific situations, training is done in settings such as grocery stores, school and other public arenas. Working at home with your loved one will allow your family a better understanding of the situations that will need work on and improve interactions between family members.
